I'm going to write down my impressions while grinding several lines up to tier 6. Currently the list of recommended tanks for clan events include Cromwell, T-34-85, KV-85, T-150, Hellcat/Jackson, T37, M6. Several of them are my targets for now.
When I was starting to play World of Tanks, I was looking mostly at german tanks 'cause of their accurate guns. Tiers 1-3 = mostly light tanks, as for me it was... annoying. I started with american T2 light (invite code), but realized I prefer to snipe from some distance rather then run like a crazy fly. Same time I didn't like slow turretless low-tiers TDs. My fav was a german Pz.Kpfw 35(t), and I even upped the crew to 1,5 skills for it. That's the only crew I have with "6th sense" so far.
Then I decided to try american TDs with turrets - ok, those are not bad, I like the speed and good guns. But they have no armor, so I thought I should try medium and heavy. M3Lee was terrible to play even as a TD. By the time I opened M4 and T1 I was fed up with the game and took a long break. And that's where I was when I came back to the game and joined the clan.
Now, platoon with a great leader and TS communication is a totally different story. Meds and heavys feel more fun then my beloved "solo" TDs.
SO here is what I have right now:
I hate lights 'cause of their "running" playstyle, weak guns and being constantly at the bottom of the list. My tier 3 vs some tier 5-6? Seriously?.. Any way, lights are the only way to get the Cromwell or T-34, so...
GB: the line is not bad at all! I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would. Tier 4 was a bit of a struggle, but oh well. And now tier 5 Crusader is my new fav. It was not bad even at the beginning, and now with the top gun it's great. It's not as speedy as other light tanks, it's closer to mediums (but no armor). But it seems to fit my "solo" playstyle perfectly. I can hide and snipe, but I also have some speed to run or flank somebody. The best thing about it is it's "medium" battle ranking (5-7, not 8 like other lights). Thinking of keeping it in my garage after I open the Cromwell.
And I just received my first "sniper" award on Crusader, yay!
USSR: oh boy... Hate their cannons. The entire branch to KV1 and T-34 was a struggle. Horrible light tanks (no speed, no view-range, no cannons). Bad T-28 med (felt slightly better then the lights, but still is a cactus). Thanks to the devs for July 1-day premium, I'm finally done with those tier 4s. But... Can't say tier 5 feels any better for my solo games.
- KV1 - meh, even half-upgraded, even with the heavy cannon. Maybe I need to get used to it. For now I don't feel the "legendary armor" advantage. No speed to run, no masking to hide, bang-bang-bang - I'm dead.
- T-34 is stock so far and I hate the gun (so slow, weak, non-accurate and bad angles) . Ok speed, no armor. Crusader feels waaaaay better.
USA:
- I still have M4 with a big gun and I play it solo sometimes. It's ok.
- T1 - meh, same story as KV-1.
- T-67 - it's "elite" and I'm trying to level up the crew to at least 1 skill (about 82% now). - Hellcat is opened and is waiting for the crew.
Germany: I just have 2 premiums here, but do not play them.
- Pz.Kpfw S35 739(f) - tier 3 "medium-heavy". Great for it's level, had lots of fun with it.
- Pz.Kpfw B2 740 (f) - tier 4 heavy. It sees tier 4 battles only, no 5 or 6. But it's not as cool as I expected, have to shoot gold to have fun, keep it for later.
So looks like I'll get Cromwell much sooner then Tier 6 USSRs and even USAs. I'm just getting much higher (average) XP per solo battle with Crusader. T-67 is my another fav, but I realize I don't play it the way I should, so the progress on the crew is somewhat slow.
As for later - initially I was thinking of german heavy line (Tigers) and "light" TDs (tier 8 Borsig Waffenträger). But now I'm not sure.
My other goal, besides getting the above listed lines to tier 6, would be to level up 2-3 crews for them, at least 2 skills each, at least 1 crew for each nation.
Currently I'm not thinking of "new" nations. Maybe later.
